Olympic Trivia

1) Swimming was introduced to the Olympics in 1896.

2) Women first swam competitively at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.

3) Water polo was one of the first team sports introduced to the Games in 1900. Players simulated horseback riding by playing on painted wooden barrels.

4) Diving was introduced to the Olympics in 1904.

5) Four human skeletons from the Iron Age (1300 BC – 600 BC) were found at the site of The 2012 Olympic Aquatic Centre before its construction.

6) The Aquatic Centre will hold up to 17,500 people.

7) 34 events will take place at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

8) The United States has nearly 4x more gold medals (214) in swimming events than its closest competitor, Australia (56).

9) The three swimming pools in the Aquatic Centre hold about 2.6 million gallons of water. They must use a ton of chlorine!

10) Synchronized swimming was demonstrated in the 1952 Olympic Games; however, it didn’t become an official Olympic competition until the 1984 Games.

11) Diving off of the 10 meter diving board is equivalent to diving off of a three story building!

12) Michael Phelps is the most decorated U.S. Olympic swimmer with 16 total medals, 14 gold and 12 bronze.

13) At the 1922 Olympic Games, American Johnny Weissmuller was the first swimmer to break the 60 second barrier for the 100 meter freestyle. The current world record is now 46.91 seconds. Wow!

14) Male swimmers wore full bodysuits in the Olympics until 1940.

15) The United States won every swimming event at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. Repeat please!
