A pool’s filtration system is a vital part of keeping your pool crystal clear and free of debris.  While chlorine and sanitizers work to kill the bacteria and other contaminants, it is the filtration system that actually removes them from the water.

Contrary to years past, today’s above ground pool owners have a wide array of pool filtration options.  AT Doheny’s Pool Supplies Fast, we carry three pool filter categories that will help you open, maintain, and clean your pool.

WHAT ARE MICRONS?

Microns are short for micrometer, which is one-millionth of a meter.  Contaminants that pool filters remove are measured in microns.  How small is a single micron? While one strand of a human hair is about 50 microns, or .05 millimeters in diameter, some bacteria measures about 2 microns, or .002 millimeters in diameter.

THREE TYPES OF POOL FILTER CATEGORIES

CARTRIDGE POOL FILTER

• - Designed mainly for spas and small above ground pools
• - Easy to maintain and clean throughout the pool season
• - To clean--remove filter and spray with garden hose 
• - Pressure gauge on filter should read between 8-10 lb
• - Typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years
• - Performs well on low speeds of variable speed systems
• - No backwashing -- less water waste
• - Needs deep cleaning 1-2 times a year
• - Handles larger amounts of debris and dirt

DE (DIATOMACEOUS EARTH) POOL FILTER

• - Filter catches and filters even the smallest of particles about 2 microns 
• - Pressure gauge to alert when it's time to backwash the filter
• - Will need annual cleaning
• - For proper cleaning the filter grids, the Celatom Diatomite Filter Media (DE) is recommended
• - Requires DE powder to keep pool water and equipment sanitary at all times
• - Most efficient filter in its category
• - Grids will need replacing every 2-3 years

SAND FILTERS

• - Low maintenance
• - Tend to trap particles within the 20-100 micron range (a human hair is approx 50 microns)
• - If well maintained, filter will only need to be replaced every 5 years
• - Actual sand will only need to be replaced every 7 years
• - Budget friendly
• - Optimal for larger pools
• - Will need to keep chemicals balanced so smaller particles will be killed
