Pool Filters & Accessories

How to choose the right pool filter for your needs.

Swimming pool filters are a vital component when it comes to the cleanliness and overall maintenance of your pool. While chemicals and sanitizers kill the bacteria and algae in your pool, it’s your filter that removes the debris from your water. Without it, your water would quickly become cloudy. When looking for the perfect swimming pool filtration system, consider all the different qualities your pool has: water capacity, geographic location, maintenance needs, and how often your swimming pool is used. Doheny's Pool Supplies Fast is your #1 stop for pool filters, filter media, valves, and replacement cartridges. Our wide selection has a filter for every pool - and budget!

Sand Filters & Systems

Sand filters–a long-lasting and economical choice–are essentially large tanks filled with pool filter sand. A great selection for above ground or inground pools, they are extremely effective in ridding even tiny, particulate matter. Sand pool filters are generally effective down to 20 microns. Plus, they are low maintenance. They require periodic backwashing and the pool filter sand only needs to be replaced every 5-7 years. Plus, they take up less room on your pool deck, making them great for smaller spaces.

Cartridge Filters & Systems

The cartridge pool filter is gaining popularity when it comes to spas and small above ground pools, and has been a popular choice for inground pool owners as well. Effective down to 5-7 microns, cartridge pool filters work by pushing water through the filter membranes, trapping particles in the cartridge fibers, and sending clean water back out to the pool. They’re also easy to maintain and clean throughout the pool season. No backwashing is required, but the cartridges need to be cleaned with a garden hose regularly. Over time the cartridge will eventually lose its filtering ability, which means that a replacement must be installed to keep the filter running smoothly. Typically, cartridges need to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on how often you filter your pool.

Diatomaceous Earth DE Filters & Systems

The highest-performing filtration systems are DE pool filters, a perfect choice for heavily-used swimming pools and pools that collect more debris than average. DE pool filters are effective down to 3 microns, so they are able to capture even the smallest particles. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally-occuring substance that is utilized in its powdered form. The fine powder clings to grids inside the filter and traps debris as the water is pumped through. DE pool filters must be backwashed when the pressure gauge increases to around 10 psi above normal. After backwashing, more DE must be added through the skimmer, and the chemicals must be rebalanced. At least twice per year the filter should be disassembled and the grids should be cleaned thoroughly. Grids should be replaced when they become worn or damaged. As you can see, DE filters require more maintenance than sand or cartridge pool filters, but many pool owners find the trade-off for higher efficiency and crystal clear water worth it.

Multi-Port Valves

If you have a sand or DE pool filter, a multiport valve can greatly simplify maintenance and improve the function of your filtration system. While they can look complicated, they are fairly simple to operate once you know how they work. Essentially a multiport valve–or MPV–provides a way to redirect water flow to wherever you need it. A handle allows the user to direct water to a specific port, whether you want to backwash the pool filter, lower the pool level or get ready for winter. At Doheny’s, we carry a wide selection of multiport valves so you can easily find the right one for your pool filter.

Filter Media

Media is simply a fancy term for the stuff inside your pool filter that traps the particles. Whether you have a sand, Diatomaceous Earth or cartridge filter, at some point, the filter media will need to be replaced. When it’s time to replace your pool filter media, look no further than Doheny’s. We carry a deep assortment of cartridges, pool sand, pool DE and alternative DE media to meet all your pool filtration needs.

Replacement Filter Cartridges

For cartridge pool filters, it’s important that you replace your cartridges periodically–usually every 2-3 years for maximum efficiency. Visit Doheny’s when it comes time to replace your cartridges. We have an unbelievable selection of filter cartridges for your swimming pool or spa, all at the lowest prices anywhere.
