Maximum Filtration Power with DE Pool Filters

If you want the clearest water possible, DE pool filters (diatomaceous earth filters) are the gold standard. These high-performance systems filter particles as small as 3–5 microns, making them ideal for heavily-used pools, debris-prone environments, or pool owners who demand the best. One note of caution: DE filters take a fair amount of time to learn how to use properly. If you have used one in the past and liked it, then stick with it. If you have previously owned a sand or cartridge filter, a DE filter might not be your best choice.

At Doheny’s, we carry a full range of DE filters and systems from top brands like Hayward and Pentair—perfect for both above ground and inground pools.

How Do DE Filters Work?

DE filters use a fine, powdery substance made from fossilized plankton (diatomaceous earth) to coat internal grids or fingers. As water passes through the coated surfaces, even the tiniest particles—like pollen, body oils, and fine dust—are trapped.

When the filter becomes clogged, it’s cleaned by backwashing, which flushes out the used DE powder. After backwashing, new DE must be added through the skimmer to recharge the filter.

Benefits of DE Pool Filters

  • Finest Filtration: Removes particles as small as 3–5 microns—clearer than sand or cartridge filters
  • Superior Water Clarity: Ideal for the highest level of water clarity
  • Efficient Circulation: Maintains strong flow rates even with fine filtration
  • Reusable Fingers & Grids: Internal fingers & grids last for years with proper care

Choosing the Right DE Filter Size

The right filter size depends on your pool’s volume and pump flow rate. Here’s a general guide:

Pool Size Recommended DE Filter Size
Up to 10,000 gallons 24–36 sq ft
10,000–20,000 gallons 36–48 sq ft
20,000–30,000 gallons 48–60 sq ft
30,000+ gallons 60+ sq ft

Need help sizing your filter? Call our experts at 800-574-7665 for personalized recommendations. It is perfectly fine to buy larger filtration systems for smaller pools. More water turnover equals more filtration, less hassle, and more fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I backwash a DE filter?

Backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above normal. Typically every 3–4 weeks during peak season.

How much DE powder do I need?

It depends on your filter size. For example, a 36 sq ft filter typically requires about 4.5 lbs of DE powder.

Can I use a DE filter with a saltwater pool?

Yes! All DE filters we carry are compatible with saltwater pools.

What’s the difference between DE, sand, and cartridge filters?

DE filters offer the finest filtration, but require more maintenance. Sand filters are the most low-maintenance, while cartridge filters offer a balance of fine filtration and easy cleaning.
