As the summer swimming season draws to a close, it is time to plan for pool winterization. Just as using a Doheny's Winter Closing Kit is important, so is a winter pool cover. Doheny's offer a huge selection of Winter Pool Covers available in round, oval and rectangular to fit any size of your above ground or inground pool. Winter covers are essential in protecting your pool from the harsh winter elements, and debris. Safety covers provide an additional crucial safeguard for children and pets for inground pools. Doheny's Pool Supplies FAST offers Standard Winter Covers and Safety Winter Covers.

Safety Winter Covers

Standard Winter Pool covers are a great option for keeping out debris and sunlight during the winter months, but they are not able to hold significant amounts of weight. Safety Winter Covers, however, are built extra strong with the purpose of preventing children and animals from accidentally falling in the pool. Safety Winter Covers tend to cost more and are more labor-intensive to install but are worth the extra investment. They offer excellent safety protections and tend to last longer. Our in-stock covers are available for rectangular pools, rectangular pools with radius corners, retangular pools with a center end step, rectangular pools with left side steps or right side steps. Doheny's carries two types of Safety Winter Covers: Solid and Mesh.

Solid Safety Covers are made from a non-permeable material, won't let sunlight and debris into your pool. They feature a mesh filtration panel to allow water to enter the pool but keep out all but the smallest particles, which means you'll be able to start swimming sooner when springtime rolls around. However, they are heavier and typically more expensive.

Mesh Safety Covers allow water to drain through the mesh material into your pool. They're typically lighter, which makes them easier to maneuver and they are also less expensive. They will catch leaves and larger debris, but they let in some sunlight and sediment. This may result in some dirt in the pool and encourage algae growth which could mean a slightly more difficult pool opening in the spring.

Pool Cover Maintenance Tips

Proper maintenance can help extend the life of your pool cover.

  • Remove any debris, leaves, and snow immediately.
  • Consider adding a leaf net over your cover.
  • Wash your cover with a mild detergent -- such as dish soap.
  • Us a pool brush to remove dirt and chemicals.
  • Check pool cover periodically, for holes, tears, or signs of wear.
  • Always wait at least two (2) hours after adding chemicals to your pool before applying your pool cover.
