As the temperatures in your area begin to drop, you’ve already taken the necessary steps to close up your pool for the year. Once the fresh snow begins to fall, you’ll still want to stay warm and cozy with a properly heated and maintained spa. Most spa owners do not close down their spa completely during the winter because they enjoy the idea of sitting in relaxing, hot, water while watching the snowflakes drift around them. You can lightly maintain your spa, and observe how it’s doing without using it during the winter months. Or, you can continue to keep it running all year long. MAKE SURE WATER IS DRAINED FROM ALL WATER LINES
For winter spa closing, check your plumbing and if necessary, remove the plumbing lines and drain them of all residual water. If you live in an area where the temperatures can potentially drop below freezing and there is leftover water in your water lines, you risk expansion of the pipe lines and permanent damage to your spa equipment. Drain and vacuum all excess water when it comes time to start ‘winterizing’ your spa.
REMOVE ALL DRAIN PLUGS
Be sure to observe your manufacturer’s instructions before you remove all drain plugs from your spa equipment. The manufacturer will be able to walk you through the process to insure a safe and easy removal. Once the drain plugs have been safely removed from the plumbing equipment, you will need to make sure they are dry and stored in a cool place all year. Do not neglect this step because it could leave you with costly results come the spring.
DISCONNECT ALL PLUMBING FROM EQUIPMENT
Make sure you remove all plumbing lines that lead to your spa equipment. They need to be properly dried, vacuumed, and stored in a cool, dry, place for next year. This is a crucial step to keep your plumbing equipment up and running for next year. (This step is only necessary if you opt not to use your spa during the winter months.)
ADD ANTIFREEZE
If you opt to close down the plumbing lines, consider adding antifreeze. This will keep the water from freezing and expanding inside the pipes. In this way, you avoid broken pipe lines come next year. It’s a good idea to check your spa manual first before you proceed with this step.
