Step 1. Use a mosquito larvicide.

Try using one mosquito larvicide dunk per 10 sq ft. of water surface area in your pool (some above-ground pools may only need two or three dunks.) When the pool is closed during the winter months, replace the dunks once a month and make sure you use a secure pool cover to keep bugs and debris out.

Step 2. Use the right pool chemicals.

The easiest way to prevent a mosquito problem from occurring in the first place is to properly maintain the pool chemicals. Use a good pool shock and pool chlorine in order to keep your water clean. Use the according to the manufacturers instructions for the best results. Before using your pool, make sure you remove the larvicide drunks and monitor the chlorine levels for at least 24 hours.

Step 3. Run the pool filter often and make sure that it’s running efficiently.

Make sure that the pool filter operates for a minimum of 2-3 hours per day. Use a timer to make it easier to remember. Check your pool filtration system for signs of wear and tear or evidence that it isn’t working as well as it could be. Keep the filter itself clean for the best results.

Step 4. Always keep the pool clean.
